Mae Na Chon Subdistrict Administrative Organization Kick Off Northern Coffee Promotion Throughout Supply Chain, Supporting 66,900 Arabica Plants to Meet Currently Increasing Demand
Mr. Akra Pramatpha, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, chaired the kick off event “Thai coffee grows with forest, creates value for the world” under the project to promote and create awareness of northern coffee production throughout the supply chain. Mr. Pirvin Kothong, Director of the Department of Agricultural Promotion, executives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and farmers attended at Mae Na Chon Subdistrict Administrative Organization Mae Chaem District Chiang Mai Province. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the Department of Agriculture Promotion organized the event to support and promote knowledge-building among coffee farmers in Mae Chaem District and Mae Wan Chiang Mai Province as a pilot area for the implementation of the project to upgrade the production mechanism, research, development and marketing of Thai coffee sustainably.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Promotion has been working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Promotion to promote the production of quality coffee, research and development throughout the coffee supply chain to jointly drive Thai coffee towards sustainable development.
“The kick off is the first and important step in developing and promoting quality coffee production to meet market demand. The main agency is the Department of Agriculture Promotion in moving forward to support knowledge and good coffee varieties for farmers over 66,900 plants and has given policy in studying the establishment of community coffee center model of the Rice Department’s community rice center. Also, all relevant agencies have been assigned to participate in the production system from soil development, water resources development and finding markets for distribution of goods to move the mission concretely and expand to other areas in the future,” Minister Akra said.
นายพีรพันธ์ คอทอง, Director-General of the Department of Agricultural Extension, stated that in the B.E. 2567/68 production year Thailand produced 14,665 tonnes of coffee from 119,607 rai of cultivated land, yielding 10,606 tonnes of green coffee, averaging 89 kilograms per rai. This was insufficient for current consumption demand, which is rising. Improving the entire northern coffee sector through environmentally responsible cultivation therefore presents an important agricultural opportunity to grow the coffee industry, increase farmers’ incomes, preserve local resources sustainably and reduce forest burning.
