On February 2, Mr. Thacpol Phakaodom, Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai Province, and a team of integrated agencies visited the participatory area development process at Ban Mae Wak (Model Mae Wak) Village No. 6 Mae Na Chon Subdistrict Mae Chaem District Chiang Mai Province, where they visited the workshops and knowledge transfer on agricultural waste management, solving the problem of burning and PM2.5 smog in high altitude areas, such as digging/cutting, fertilisation with low-chemical fertilizers, planting vegetables in greenhouses, etc.
He also praised the exemplary farmers and villagers in the area who are strong enough to change land use and practice non-burning agriculture, leading to the reduction of burning and PM2.5 smog, and praised the coordinating agencies for jointly driving participatory area-based development.
The Mae Na Chon Subdistrict Administrative Organization has been working with network partners and communities to implement a systemic, field-based approach through a participatory process with the community and agencies to solve the problems of the community in a sustainable, balanced and area-appropriate way, as well as supporting the necessary infrastructure and applying research knowledge to support the development process, especially “environmentally friendly farming” to generate income and reduce burning in agricultural areas.
The Mae Na Chon Subdistrict Administrative Organization has the vision to scale up the successes of the pilot area to other highland communities through the collaboration of the community and all stakeholders, along with the application of research, technology and innovation in line with the problems and social context of each area, leading to the reduction and management of hotspots and burns scars in agricultural areas that are part of the source of PM2.5 particulate matter in Mae Na Chon Subdistrict Mae Chaem District as a key target.
